WORKSHOP 1 - Tuesday, 24.09.2019

Wildlife Telemetry Technologies

Free entrance

At different levels Telemetry can allow a minimum invasion to the species and their habitats, while at the same time allows to collect data that is otherwise very difficult or impossible to gather, such as habitat uses, survival rates, home range, domain areas, reproductive and feeding behavior, interactions, and a long etcetera. During the workshop we will learn about the most widely accepted Telemetry techniques for Wildlife research, with emphasis on VHF Radio-tracking and GPS with wireless and satellite data transmission.
Associated sensors, scopes and limitations, diagnosing how to select the best option in terms of technology, weight, dimensions and attachment techniques according to the particular species of interest is also included. If conditions allow it, we can include a practice with functional equipment. This is an extremely useful tool for any researcher who is interested in implementing telemetry equipment for wildlife, it does not matter If the need is immediate, for a future project, or you simply want to be better qualified in case it is ever needed.
TOPICS:
> Explanation of the following Telemetry systems:
- Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID)
- Acoustic Transmitters
- Light Level Geolocator (GLS)
- Harmonic radar
- Terrestrial Radio-Tracking (VHF)
- Satellite Radio-Tracking (PTT)
- Global Positioning System (GPS)
- GPS with remote data download via:
- Handheld Receiver
- GPRS
- Satellite
- Sensors
- Drop-offs
> How to select the best option and models in terms of weight, dimensions, attachment, lifespan, etc.
> VHF in depth, including thorough explanation of radio signals, antennas, receivers, tracking techniques,
tips and tricks.
> GPS in depth, including accuracy, success rate, programming, sensors, obtained data.
>Practice: Use of VHF Radio, GPS-Wireless and GPS-Satellite Telemetry Equipment
- Location of a VHF radio transmitter. Practical use of Receiver and 3 elemment Yagi antenna

Turning Sound into Discovery: Using Wildlife Audio Recorders as a Valuable Research Tool

Sound analysis is increasingly becoming a valuable tool for biologists, environmental scientists and managers for surveying and monitoring wildlife populations. It is currently used to aid in resource management, habitat health assessment, regulatory compliance goals, animal behavior studies and even documenting the effects of climate change. Recording sound with a bioacoustics recorder is a reliable way to meet these project objectives.  Bioacoustics is a non-invasive, cost-effective and an unbiased method for studying animal presence.   Biologists all over the world have made the Song Meter platform the standard for bioacoustics recording with over 50,000 recorders deployed in 90 countries.  The first section of the workshop will be an overview of the features and set up of the Song Meter SM4 recorder to monitor for bats, birds, frogs, and other wildlife.   The remainder of the workshop will focus on reviewing your auditory data using the Kaleidoscope Pro software.  Participants will learn how to use Kaleidoscope Pro to quickly and efficiently sort through recordings to meet project objectives.  Several case studies of how our customers are doing this will be presented and discussed.  If participants could download and install  Kaleidoscope Pro Analysis Software from the Wildlife Acoustics website https://www.wildlifeacoustics.com/download/kaleidoscope-software you will be walked through how to use the software to analyze large data sets quickly and accurately. Sample recordings will be supplied but please feel free to bring along with sample recordings on your own.
