Warsaw is located in east-central Poland, in the heartland of the Masovian Plain, and lies on the banks of the Vistula river (Wisła). Vistula crosses the city on a north-south axis, dividing it into two parts, usually referred to as the left bank (Polish: lewy brzeg adj. lewobrzeżna Warszawa) and the right bank (Polish: prawy brzeg adj. prawobrzeżna Warszawa). Historically, the right bank was the first one to become populated, during the 9th or 10th century. However, the present city's central district, called Śródmieście lies on the left bank. Warsaw is a county (powiat), and is further divided into 18 districts (dzielnica) and the conference will be held in Ochota. Warsaw has a continental climate, with warm summers, crisp, sunny autumns and cold winters.
September mean temperature is 13,3ºC (daily mean about 18ºC, night 8,6ºC ), and precipitation 42 ml.
By air: Warsaw is served by two airports: Chopin Airport (IATA: WAW) (also known as 'Okecie') for major airlines, Modlin Airport (IATA: WMI) handles the low cost traffic. The best option to reach the WULS (SGGW) place from the Chopin Airport is the bus. There is line 148 that provides access to Ursynów (get off the bus at the stop: Ciszewskiego 04). Warsaw city center can be reached by the bus lines: 175 and 188 during the day and N32 at night. The fare is PLN 4.40 one-way (and the reduced fare is 50% of that) for all the lines (day and night). Terminal for buses and coaches is located on the arrivals level, in front of the south pier.
Modlin Airport: there is an express shuttle service connecting Warsaw-Modlin Airport with Warsaw City Center. ModlinBus offers direct transport to Warsaw City Center (across from the main entrance of the Palace of Culture). Koleje Mazowieckie trains ofers transport to the City Center too. To get to the the Faculty of Biology Warsaw University from the city center, you can utilise Warsaw's public transport system (ZTM), you can choose tram(Number 7, 9, 25) or bus.
By train: Warsaw has three stations for long-distance trains: Dworzec Centralny or Warszawa Centralna (Warsaw Central), Dworzec Wschodni or Warszawa Wschodnia (Warsaw East) (on the right bank) and Dworzec Zachodni or Warszawa Zachodnia (Warsaw West). The best option is Dworzec Centralny (Warszawa Centralna) station, as it has best connections with all the places in the city (look at ZTM public transport map) . All long-distance trains pass through this station and all stop there. It is the only long-distance station underground. Remember that it isn't the last station on the route!
By car: Warsaw lies in east-central Poland about 300 km (190 mi) from the Carpathian Mountains and about 260 km (160 mi) from the Baltic Sea, 523 km (325 mi) east of Berlin, Germany. Four European "E-roads" lead to Warsaw: E30 (A2), E77 (7), E67 under the unofficial name of Via Baltica, (A8), and E372 (17). The E-numbers are usually displayed on signs but it is best to know the national road numbers too, which are the numbers in parentheses.
